Report Racism, Australia’s first ever third-party reporting mechanism for the Aboriginal community is being trialled in Shepparton and Northern Melbourne. The project is a partnership between the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, Victoria Police and the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service.
Report Racism is a tool that enables individuals to report any incident of racism, which may include racial discrimination, racially motivated crime or racially motivated incidents by any member of the community, including police officers. Reports can be made online at www.reportracism.com.au or through a local reporting place. Reports can be made by a witness, victim or a third party. Once a report is made, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission will be responsible for managing the information.
Shepparton has a number of reporting sites including the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Goulburn Valley Legal Centre, Lullas Family and Children Centre and Rumbalara Cooperative – Justice Services and Primary Care Connect which will provide safe places to support the community in reporting.
