This position works within the Family Violence Team with the aim to provided services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People who have experienced or are affected by Family Violence and are at risk of being unsafe in the family environment, in a culturally safe and sensitive manner. The Indigenous Family Violence Support Worker provides education, information, short term support, advocacy and referrals. The service also aims to raise community awareness regarding family violence and its effects within the community.
The target group of this program includes those for whom family violence contributes to circumstances that threaten or adversely affect the adequacy, safety, security and affordability of housing and maintenance of the family environment. This also includes those who are no longer in abusive relationships, those who are currently in an abusive relationship and those who have not previously accessed police or crisis services for family violence related matters.
The Indigenous Family Violence Support Worker does not provide diagnosis or specialised psychological treatments, immediate or after hours crisis response, long term counselling or case management. Clients will be referred onto these specialist services as required.
